General information

Background: Occupies modern building, opened in 1990, on outskirts of Gateshead; large catchment area covers whole of Gateshead, much of western Newcastle-upon-Tyne and a small part of County Durham. Fully comprehensive intake, with two-thirds of pupils from inner-city areas. The school building has high-density computer rooms, a lecture theatre, study areas and adjacent sports fields. Able children are entered early in GCSE English and mathematics. City Technology College status means that all students take technology at least to GCSE, with 75% achieving A* or A in recent examinations; most students take 12 or 13 GCSEs; the most able receive specific training in logic, rhetoric, economics, and politics within a leadership and management course; others follow a BTEC first diploma and Applied GCSEs alongside the core curriculum. Over-subscribed, with more than two applications per place. Leading Edge status. Ethos: 'Emmanuel's Christian ethos ensures that young people's character development is to the fore. A culture of mutual respect and personal best has led to academic standards that place Emmanuel among the top comprehensive schools in the country.' .
