General information

Background: Founded in 1966, Harlow Green is located in a residential area at the edge of the town of Gateshead, beside the Angel of the North. It is set in a 'large' site with a modern two-storey, flat roofed building. This consists of 12 classrooms, an information and communications technology suite, corridors and a literacy resources room, all of which are separated from the dining and assembly halls by the administration block. Harlow Green is a host school for the visually impaired and support is provided with access and provisioned resources for the visually and hearing impaired. The 'extensive' grounds include a school garden with a ceramic backdrop, which was designed and developed by pupils, a 'large' grassed sports area and surroundings with tarmac playing area. Curricular achievements of the school include a handwriting award for visually impaired students, Healthy Schools awards in 1998 and 1999 and HFC bank prizes. The school has been the champion of the district music festival's choir and individual competitions for several years. There is a 'very good' range of extra-curricular activities including drama club, rugby, cricket, netball, athletics, netball, and a whistle and ceilidh group. The school has a 'very fine' sporting record. Other sports include football, hockey and gymnastics, and the football team plays in the South League of Gateshead Primary Schools Football Association. The school is involved in a 'variety' of arts projects including 'direct involvement' with the Gateshead Angel. Fundraising involvement has been 'broad' with several local, national and international charities supported. The school was labelled a Beacon school by OFSTED inspectors. Pupils are encouraged to be aware of the local community and their immediate environment, through visits and many other forms of contact. The school is currently over-subscribed.
