General information

Headteacher: Gillian Burt.

Background: Founded in 1894, Craigholme school is situated in the heart of Pollokshields, a Victorian suburb in the south side of Glasgow and spans three closely linked sites on St Andrew's Drive and Nithsdale road. Craigholme is a leading provider of modern and dynamic education with the very best of traditional values. Craigholme school is housed over three different sites within a few minutes walking distance of one another. Each site is a converted Victorian villa, retaining many of the original period features. The school's library and resource centre is a popular and well-used facility.

Inspection: January 2006: Staff at Craigholme School provided pupils from J1 to S6 with a balanced educational experience, through the formal curriculum and a wide range of extra-curricular activities. Pupils were enthusiastic and motivated. They worked well independently and, when given the opportunity, collaborated effectively. In some lessons, particularly in the junior school, there was scope for more opportunity for collaborative learning. Overall, the quality of teaching was good, with some very effective practice. Across the school, standards of achievement were high and in the senior school, levels of attainment were consistently very high. Staff met individual pupils? learning needs in a flexible and sensitive way, particularly in the junior school. The principal provided strong leadership. At the time of the inspection, she had been in post for one year. During this time she had introduced important improvements to school procedures, including approaches to self-evaluation and development planning. These were beginning to have a positive impact on the quality of pupils? learning experiences. The principal had managed change well and had won the confidence and support of pupils, parents and staff. Her own teaching was a model of good practice. Senior managers demonstrated effective teamwork. In planning for improvement, they gave high priority to pupils? learning and achievements. The deputy principals carried out their remits very ably. They were actively involved in taking forward the organisation and delivery of the curriculum and the systematic monitoring and recording of pupils? progress. The newly appointed head of junior school had made a very good start at improvement by involving staff in reflecting on their own teaching practices, and in strengthening teamwork. She had well-judged priorities for improving cohesion and progression in the junior school curriculum. The director of ICT, heads of department and heads of houses provided valued support. Some were particularly influential in leading school improvements. The Board of Directors, and in particular members of its education committee, provided effective support and challenge for the school and its plans to improve pupils? learning experience..
