General information

Headteacher: Shona McKnight.

Background: Glasgow Academy?s Prep School is conveniently situated directly opposite the Senior part of the school and shares many of its facilities. Originally a row of terraced houses Westbourne House, as it is known, has been completely refurbished to provide an ideal learning environment for around 400 pupils. First year in the Prep School, girls and boys enjoy singing with their class teacher. In addition all children have music lessons with a music specialist. In the first couple of years, classes learn the rudiments of physical education by playing movement games, usually in the Prep School Assembly Hall, again under the supervision of specialist PE staff. The Prep School has its own computer room - equipped to the same high specification as that of the Senior School. Classes have regular access to this facility from Prep 4 onwards. They learn typing skills and make use of the Internet for project work. Our sophisticated ?Net Nanny? service ensures that no child can stray into inappropriate areas. In addition, all classes in the Prep School have their own computer which children work on regularly.

Inspection: December 2002: 'The headteacher provided good leadership. During her two years in post she had handled changes with sensitivity and had earned the confidence and respect of parents, pupils and staff. On taking up post, she had identified the need to review and develop important aspects of the curriculum. She had started this process and had introduced new resources to improve the programmes in English language and mathematics. The school?s aims were appropriate and provided a sound basis for evaluating its work. The headteacher was aware of the need to involve staff more fully in the development of policies. She recognised that a number of policy statements required to be updated to provide staff with additional support and guidance. Arrangements for staff development and review were fair. The school offered a very caring, supportive and motivating learning environment for the pupils in its care. Staff and pupils worked very well together and there was a strong sense of community in all areas of the school. The headteacher and staff had introduced a number of important initiatives to develop the programmes of study in reading, writing and mathematics. The development of more detailed procedures for planning and assessment should enable the school to make further improvements to the standard of pupils? attainment across the curriculum.'
