General information

Headteacher: James Womersley, appointed in August 1997.

Staff: 36 (men 18, women 18).

Background: Beaudesert Park founded in 1908 in Henely in Arden by the Richardson Family. The school moved to Gloustershire in 1918 and remained in the control of the Richardson/Keyte Family for three generations until 1995. The main house was built in the mock Tudor style and is set in a rural location on the edge of Minchinhampton Common. It aims to be an all round academic and sporting school and has good music and art departments. Facilities include a well-stocked library, well-equipped design technology room with networked computers, fine art and pottery studio and photographic dark room. The creative arts are emphasised and pupils learn art, music and drama as part of the curriculum in addition to art, music and drama clubs and activities. Pupils are introduced to a wide range of sporting activities and as many as possible participate in inter-school matches. The school has a variety of sports facilities including pitches, a sports hall and indoor swimming pool. It organises a bi-annual charity fete and has an active Red Cross Club, which enhances close community links.

Approach to discipline: Good behaviour is encouraged in the school. The school emphasises on positive reinforcement and effort. Children carry a personal record of achievement, which is taken home.

Uniform: Boys: grey trousers, grey shirt, green military jumper, sports jacket and tie for best. Girls: black watch kilt, green roll neck, green crew neck sweater. The girls' uniform has just been changed so we are in the interim stages at the moment with some in old style and some in new.

Inspection: November 2001: 'Beaudesert Park is a good school. It has many strengths and is very well placed to continue its successful development. It is effectively managed and led. The pupils attain good standards in relation to their ages and abilities and they make at least good progress. The teaching they receive is at least good and some is very good. The provision for the pastoral care of the pupils and the quality of the boarding are very good.'

Secondary schools: Marlborough College; Cheltenham Ladies; Radley; Cheltenham College; Downe House.

Boys' age range: 4 to 13.
