General information

Headteacher: Nigel Archdale, appointed in September 1992.

Staff: 50 (men 20, women 30).

Background: Founded in 1863; moved in 1908 to parkland site where it has since grown; all buildings are purpose-built for education, with the exception of the magnificent Lake House building, a former Cheltenham residence, which now houses the music school. The Kingfishers pre-prep opened in 1993 to provide a foundation for children aged between three to seven. The junior school has its own playing fields and grounds which include a shallow boating lake. Technology, ICT, music, art and sport provide all pupils with a 'very wide range of opportunities'. Science is taught in the Cheltenham College laboratories; sports hall, 25-metre swimming pool, two Astroturf pitches (one of which is floodlit) and chapel are all shared with Cheltenham College. Strong emphasis on differentiated learning, specialist teachers, and strong sport, music and drama. Music and sports tours, both national and international. A 'family-run' boarding house caters for 50 children and a flexi-boarding sleepover club. Inclusive, enabling and enthusiastic.

Approach to discipline: 'Firm, fair and friendly with a high expectation of personal self discipline being encouraged from an early age.'

Uniform: Boys: grey shirt, dark-blue sweater, blazer and tie for best dress, grey cord shirt for younger boys. Girls: Blouse, blue sweater, Black Watch tartan kilt, dress in summer. 'Everyone is expected to wear their uniform.'

Special needs: Small unit to help support able children with specific learning difficulties.

Inspection: January 2005: 'Cheltenham College Junior School combines the stimulation of a busy and purposeful school with the warmth of a supportive family environment. The high quality and flexibility of the school?s boarding provision and its commitment to pupils? personal development and pastoral care strengthen it as a community. Good teaching promotes very good attitudes towards learning and high standards of behaviour. The quality of the curriculum, and the extra-curricular activities that support it, enrich pupils? lives. The high standard of facilities and accommodation is only diminished by inappropriate provision for the nursery and design technology. The school?s espousal of computer technology ensures very good communication between staff and ready access to pupil records. However, the school makes limited use of assessment data to develop its curriculum. Furthermore, the lack of specific current job descriptions, and the inconsistency with which departmental appraisal and monitoring are implemented, diminish otherwise good management systems.'
