General information
Headteacher: John Richardson, appointed in 2004.
Background: Founded in 1841, Cheltenham College grew quickly to become one of the largest boarding schools in the UK. It is characterised by its Christian foundation and emphasis on scholarship and public service. Today there are more than 450 full boarders and just over 100 day pupils in the coeducational senior school housed in neo-Gothic buildings close to the regency town of Cheltenham Spa, in the heart of the Cotswold countryside. The college encourages and rewards excellence in every aspect that enriches the school's life and there is a wide range of scholarships. Academic standards are high. The vast majority of pupils go on to university, some winning places at Oxford or Cambridge. While the college's first priority is that pupils should be stretched academically and intellectually, great import is attached to every aspect of their educational experience sporting, cultural and spiritual. Chapel is at the centre of college life. The main sports are rugby, hockey, cricket, netball, rowing and tennis, although many other sports are on offer including clay pigeon shooting, polo, golf, badminton and swimming. There are numerous bands and orchestras, a chapel choir and nine drama productions a year, and students can take advantage of Cheltenham's music, literature and jazz festivals. Pupils get involved in a wide range of other extracurricular options from the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme and Combined Cadet Force to fly fishing, pottery and community service. Cheltonians are also involved in charitable projects at home and abroad.
Alumni: Edward Wilson, Antarctic explorer; Patrick White, author and Nobel prize winner; Sir Alan Haselhurst, Conservative MP; Rageh Omaar, broadcaster.
Higher education: 90% (3 Oxford 3 Cambridge).
Special needs: All pupils are tested on arrival to see if they require learning support. The school screens for dyslexia. There is a full-time learning support co-ordinator and an extensive programme of one-to-one classes.
Inspection: September 2000: Cheltenham College provides a good, rounded education for pupils of a wide range of ability. It adds good value to both their academic and personal development. Its magnificent buildings, set in a pleasant and well cared for campus, make a splendid background for learning which is appreciated by all its pupils.
