General information

Background: A rural primary school; pupils generally from immediate locality; founded in 1886 as a 'national school'; maintains strong links with community. 'The school is fortunate to enjoy a beautiful location, but, as with most Victorian buildings, it has limited space and grounds.' Positive relationships between home and school: 'The school recognises the value of the partnership between parents, pupils and teachers, and continues to work very hard to involve as many agencies as possible in the learning process.' Slightly over-subscribed. Thriving orchestra; extra-curricular activities include major team sports, art and craft, dance, drama, ICT club, and French and German groups for most age ranges; twice small-schools area athletics champions; two former pupils in British equestrian events, and one in national cross-country championships. Links with school in Russia, following headteacher's visit in 1996. 'The school acknowledges its long history and still holds traditional Maypole danacing as well as the special crowning ceremony for a pupil, chosen by the children, to be the May Queen.' Supoorts local and national fundraising: 'Jeans for Genes', Royal National Institute for the Blind's 'Look loud day', and 'Winston's wish', a bereavement support service. Before-school care, 8am-8.50am; after-school, 3.15pm-6pm.
