General information

Background: The school was founded in 1384 by Katharine, the wife of Lord Berkeley. It moved to its current attractive location surrounded by open fields outside the town of Wotton-under-Edge in 1963 and became a comprehensive when it merged with Wotton Secondary School in 1973. Its buildings have been extended over the last few years, including a large teaching block, science laboratories and library in 2000 as well as new music accommodation in 2003. Facilities include a large sports centre with squash courts, a fully equipped fitness suite and 'extensive' playing fields. Specialist language college status. The school offers a wide range of languages including French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin and Latin, all except Latin to A-level. The school aims to 'provide a safe, stimulating and enjoyable learning environment so that each pupil is motivated to achieve the highest standards of which they are capable.' Specialist language college status. Over-subscribed, with 1.2 applications per place. Investor in People status (2001); DfES achievement award (2002).
