General information

Background: The school, which lies in the heart of the Cotswolds, was founded in 1887 by Sir Samuel Marling and other local benefactors, although its roots go much further back. It inherited the endowments of the Red Coat School, Stroud (1642), the St Chloe School Amberley (1699) and the educational charities of the 17th and 18th centuries. The school has extensive grounds and occupies buildings which vary from Victorian to a recently-opened sports hall, design and technology block, and sixth-form centre. Sports strengths include rugby, soccer, hockey, cricket, athletics and cross-country. World Challenge expeditions to Botswana and ski trips to North America and Europe enhance the academic provision. 'Students are encouraged to appreciate scientific, linguistic and artistic skills, and to understand the historical, cultural and environmental dimensions of life.' Over-subscribed, with more than two applications per place. Sportsmark; Investor in People status (2004); DfES achievement award (2002). Ethos: 'The school aims to create a pleasant and stimulating environment that will enhance the learning process as well as encompassing the wider environment.' .
