General information
Headteacher: Virginia Rickus, appointed in September 2002.
Staff: 21 (men 1, women 20).
Background: The junior department moved into refurbished premises, previously occupied by the senior school, in 1994. The building was purpose-built circa 1880, with a grand Palladian-style hall and balustraded double staircase and offers excellent accommodation and the chance to expand numbers to 300. Most girls will move on to the senior school and juniors are very much part of the whole school, despite the split-site. A new multimedia resource centre has recently been opened; ICT suite. There are specialist teachers for subjects, including French. After-school care is provided and offers girls the chance to do homework or take part in a range of other structured activities, supervised by well-qualified staff. Breakfast club; before-school care, from 7.30am; after-school care, until 5.50pm Ethos: 'Caring; showing consideration for others.' .
Approach to discipline: 'Girls are encouraged to treat everybody within the school community with respect and consideration. They are also encouraged to take responsibility and be accountable for their own behaviour.'
Uniform: Checked blouses, navy pinafore dress/pleated skirt. Uniform 'must be kept smart and tidy at all times'. Striped summer dress.
Special needs: Part-time special needs teacher; support given in small groups or individually.
Inspection: January 2002: 'Blackheath High School GDST is a well-managed school that successfully advances the academic progress of its pupils and prepares them very appropriately for the next stages in their lives. Increasingly close liaison is occurring between the junior and senior sections of the school in terms of both academic and extra-curricular activities. Very good levels of attainment are achieved in most subjects throughout the school. Pastoral care is particularly strong in the junior phase, but the senior phase should now build on the success it has had in dealing with behavioural matters and establish more clearly-recognised systems for the support and guidance of its pupils.'
