Background: Celebrating its 125th anniversary this year, Blackheath High School maintains that it is a place where pupils grow and excel. The school aims to educate the whole person, developing self-confidence and respect for others and establishing in each pupil the qualities needed to overcome life's challenges. Pupils are encouraged to engage in rational argument and are expected to develop good study habits. A broad and stimulating curriculum is offered, with specialisation deferred as long as possible. The choice of GCSE subjects is wide (currently 21) and includes the three separate sciences as well as the dual award. Girls in the sixth form take four or five AS-level subjects in their first year, dropping one in their final year. Pupils are encouraged to study at least two modern languages at GCSE and one at AS-level. From September this year, the school will teach Mandarin as well as French, German, Spanish and Japanese. The school has two orchestras, three choirs and a jazz band, and offers music lessons as part of its extracurricular programme. Drama competitions and an annual theatrical production give pupils the opportunity to perform on stage, and there are regular visits to London's West End. Pupils also visit museums and art galleries and carry out fieldwork activities both at home and abroad. Sixth-formers are offered work experience overseas.

Alumni: Helen Lederer, actress; Mary Quant, fashion designer.

Uniform: Dark-navy polyester or wool skirt, navy and white striped blouse, navy with gold stripe in neckline pullover, ankle or knee length socks or tights in dark-navy only, clean low-heeled shoes in dark-navy or black in one colour only.

Special needs: Teachers produce individual education plans. Individual support lessons can be provided at extra cost.
