General information

Headteacher: John Gallagher , appointed in September 2007.

Staff: 21 (men 8, women 13).

Background: Founded in 1652; prep school officially opened by Prince Michael of Kent in 1988; housed in purpose-built accommodation in same grounds as pre-prep and senior school; benefits from use of sports hall, indoor swimming pool, tennis courts and extensive on-site playing fields. Substantial extension building opened in 2000, comprising library, art and design centre, and modern spacious classrooms; prep school also has own science laboratory and ICT room. State-of-the art wireless computer network recently installed, providing pupils with radiowave link from laptop computers to central information network, including internet access. 'The school has a reputation for excellence within a friendly and caring atmosphere'. French offered as part of broad curriculum; sports include rugby, football, cricket, swimming, tennis, netball, rounders, athletics, badminton, basketball, dance, gymnastics, judo, hockey, roller hockey and cross-country. School choir, orchestra, strings group and numerous ensembles perform frequently both in and out of school. Annual major drama production includes all pupils. Wide range of more than 40 after-school clubs; late-school scheme operates for children of working parents. Selective from the age of seven; aims to 'provide an excellent all-round education in preparation for entry into the senior school'. Over-subscribed, with three applications per place.

Approach to discipline: 'Strong pastoral care system, with the form teacher taking the responsibility for the day-to-day care, including discipline of their pupils. Serious or persistent cases are referred to the head, who will contact parents if necessary. PSHE is taught to all classes each week, including anti-bullying strategies in each year-group.'

Uniform: Boys: navy blazer, grey trousers, navy crested school tie, white shirt. Girls: navy blazer, blue checked kilt, blue cardigan, white blouse. 'Strict uniform code.'

Special needs: Full-time learning development tutor who helps pupils on individual basis for maximum of two periods a week.

Inspection: November 2006: 'The school is clearly successful in meeting its aims, and pupils thrive as a result. The school pursues academic excellence within the context of a well-rounded education, and it achieves well on both fronts. Teaching and learning are purposeful and exciting. The school is characterised by the enthusiasm for learning that it generates; this is shared by teachers and pupils alike. High expectations in lessons and wide opportunities beyond the classroom contribute to pupils' confidence, self-reliance and self-discipline. This stands them in good stead for their subsequent education and the challenges of later life. The school works closely with parents and takes action where it recognises that communication could be improved. The school is taking stock pending the appointment of a new head. It is developing a clear understanding of what works well and what could be even better. In particular, it recognises the need to move forward by building collectively on the achievements of the pre-prep and the prep within the Prep School as a whole, and by strengthening links with the Senior School. The school meets all the regulatory requirements.'
