General information
Headteacher: Sarah Salathiel, appointed in April 2001.
Staff: 42 (men 8, women 34).
Motto: Ut prosim (That i maybe of service).
Background: Riverston School was founded in 1926 and has been owned by the same family since 1956. The school is built around four Victorian buildings. Behind this historic facade the school has developed modern teaching accommodation. This includes a recently extended sports hall including brand new changing and shower facilities, new dance/drama studio and multi media room. The school has use of the adjacent grounds for use of sports throughout the year. Additional subjects include drama, music, dance and French speaking and listening. Sports offered include football, rugby, badminton, rounders, swimming, gymnasium, trampolining, basketball, volleyball, tennis and netball. The school offers various extra-curricular clubs which include Japanese, multi-cultural, science, information and communication technology, literacy, football, tennis, netball, music, ballet, drama and many more. The school has a breakfast club and after-school care facility. The school provides an atmosphere of great understanding that encourages students to develop their activities to the full and thus acquire self-confidence and self-discipline. There is a caring, friendly and supportive environment.
Approach to discipline: The school has a code of conduct, which is strictly enforced. The school aims to develop self-discipline and create the conditions for an orderly community in which effective learning can take place and in which there is mutual respect.
Uniform: All students wear full school uniform. This is actively enforced by staff and parents.
Special needs: There are two designated staff members monitoring learning support. Staff training provided for all expertise called in when required. The school provides differentiated curriculum enabling all pupils to reach their potential.
Inspection: March 2004: 'Riverston School provides a secure and supportive community in which pupils fulfil their potential and grow into mature, caring and responsible young people. Good teaching in the senior school enables them to achieve good results at GCSE and to be well prepared for adult life. Pupils benefit from the small size of the school and from very good relationships between different cultural and ethnic groups. Pastoral care is very good. However, library provision is poor and some aspects of school management are not effective.'
Boys' age range: 1 to 16.
Girls' age range: 1 to 16.
Before-school care: 08.00-08.30.
After-school care: 15.15-18.00.
Factors taken into account other than academic ability: Previous school report and performance made by the pupil during a two days trial period.
Selection procedures: Entrance assessment - two days visit.
