General information

Headteacher: C P A Fisher.

Staff: 21 (men 5, women 16).

Background: St Olave's was founded in 1932 and since 1970 has been administered as a charitable trust. Its intake covers a wide ability range and children are taught in small, mixed ability classes. The school is proud of its 'success in preparing pupils for the selection examinations to secondary schools', while the needs of the less academic pupils are catered for 'with care'. Facilities include a 'well-resourced' music room and a purpose-built hall in which physical education, dance and drama are taught. There is a 'well-stocked' library and computers are provided in each classroom, while a recent building programme provided new purpose-built accommodation for Years 5 and 6. The school offers a broad curriculum which includes piano and speech and drama. There is specialist teaching in music and games from the age of three and in French from the age of six. Outdoor games take place at a nearby private sports field and swimming is provided from the age of six at a modern local pool with professional coaches. Extra-curricular activities include piano, ballet, tap, speech and drama, football, netball, tag rugby, American football, athletics, gymnastics, cricket, country dancing, web group, chess, cookery, sewing, art and story club. Regular outings are arranged, with environmental fieldwork at a residential centre for Years 4 and 5 and an activity holiday for Year 6. The school has earned a 'well-deserved reputation locally for providing a secure and happy environment in which each child is nurtured and seen as an individual with his or her own strengths and needs'. By the time the children leave at 11 they have a 'strong sense of their own self-worth and have a good foundation upon which to build in future years'.

Approach to discipline: 'A respect for self and others underpins the school's approach to discipline. The staff provide a caring and supportive environment and model the behaviour expected from the children. Clear boundaries are set for what is acceptable and what is not. The children are encouraged to see themselves as part of a community that cares for all its members. Positive reinforcement is used to acknowledge good behaviour and sanctions are rarely necessary.'

Uniform: The predominant colours are dark-green and white. 'Uniform is worn throughout the school.'

Special needs: The school has a qualified special needs teacher and a fully-equipped SEN room. It can meet the needs of children with mild specific learning difficulties of a dyslexic nature.

Inspection: May 2004: 'The school has many strengths and few weaknesses and has moved forward considerably since the last inspection, particularly since the appointment of the current headteacher. The recently appointed senior management team (SMT) is beginning to have a very positive impact on the work of the school. An initial review and self-evaluation has provided a clear set of appropriate priorities for future developments. The chair of the trustees in close collaboration with the headteacher is well aware that much has been accomplished but more can still be achieved.'

Secondary schools: Eltham College; Colfe's; Bromley High; Alleyn's; Chistlehurst and Sidcup Grammar.

Boys' age range: 3 to 11.

Girls' age range: 3 to 11.
