General information

Headteacher: Prudence Lynch, appointed in September 2003.

Staff: 32 (men 2, women 30).

Background: Founded in 1873, the school's spacious premises offer 'some of the best facilities of any London prep school'. The school has many specialist teaching rooms, large outside space for sport, and a pond for environmental studies. The curriculum includes French, drama, and a Latin 'taster' year. Netball, short tennis, tennis and rounders are among the sports offered, with soccer played after school. The school works for charities to enhance pupils' understanding of the world around them; linked with Ghanaian school. It aims to provide 'a happy and friendly environment in which to continue its record of intellectually-stimulating education and caring community; respect for each other; individuals valued and achievements valued; enquiring minds encouraged.' .

Approach to discipline: 'The code of conduct for the pupils is based on mutual respect. The school uses privilege time to reward good behaviour and are pro-active in resolving bullying incidents.'

Uniform: Charcoal-grey and white checked blouse, charcoal-grey pinafore, charcoal-grey duffle-coat, cherry-red blazer, cherry-red cardigan, charcoal-grey and white checked summer dress.

Special needs: The school has full-time special educational needs co-ordinator (SENCO). Children with mild learning difficulties are given learning support on a one-to-one basis by a fully-qualified dyslexia/dyspraxia specialist.

Inspection: March 2003: 'Kensington Preparatory School is a very good school. Very well managed, it has a warm and impressive ethos combining a strong measure of pastoral care with a spirit of individual endeavour. The environment created is conducive to a high quality of learning and behaviour, and this, together with some very good teaching, leads to a high level of attainment from the pupils.'
