Background: Founded by Edward Latymer in 1624 to educate the [L]poore boyes of Hammersmith[R], Latymer Upper School still has close links with the community. The majority of its pupils live within four miles of the campus. The school's progressive tradition is demonstrated by its firm belief in coeducation as the [L]best and most natural preparation for adult life[R] and by the religious and ethnic mix of its student body. The school is keen to ensure that academic high achievement is not won at the expense of its pupils' happiness. The curriculum is broad. Biology, chemistry and physics are studied separately from year 7. The sixth form of about 360 students is one of the biggest in London, although teaching groups average 13 in the final year. Students choose up to five AS and four A-level subjects and most go on to study at a leading university. Due to its Thamesside location, rowing is one of the school's strongest sports. Other facilities include a sports hall, gym and swimming pool. The playing fields, refurbished in 2004, are a coach ride away at Wood Lane. The school's arts centre has a 300-seat theatre, music school, galleries and art studios. Each year, each division of the school puts on a big production and there is an annual Shakespeare evening for year 8. The range of extracurricular activities includes trekking in Tibet, bridge, fencing, choirs, dance, web design and fly-fishing. A new music school and dance/drama studio is expected to be completed by 2008.
Alumni: Alan Rickman, Hugh Grant, Mel Smith, actors; Heston Blumenthal, chef; Prof Richard Perham, biochemist.
Higher education: 100% (14 Oxford 3 Cambridge).
Special needs: There are two full-time special educational needs teachers plus additional staff. Students are given extra time in exams. All new pupils are screened for dyslexia.
Inspection: October 2001: High academic standards and well-motivated students are some of the major strengths of Latymer Upper School. Pupils benefit from a tolerant and friendly school community, dedicated staff and outstanding extracurricular programme. More consistent enforcement of pupil punctuality and dress is advised.
Feeder schools: Ravenscourt Park; Hill House; Thomas' Prep; Pembridge House; Kew College.
Boys' age range: 7 to 18.
Girls' age range: 7 to 18.
Percentage admitted according to academic ability: 100.
