Background: St James Schools were founded in 1975 by Leon MacLaren. They were to provide an all-through education from the age of 4½ to 18 for both boys and girls, with a curriculum both traditional and innovative. At the time, the education values which have informed the best English schools were under attack, discipline was breaking down, classical subjects were being abandoned, and the teaching of Christianity was no longer central. There was in fact a gap at the centre of education. Leon MacLaren envisaged a school which would restore spiritual values, uphold traditional morality, and encourage systematic study.St James Independent Junior Schools share a magnificent Central London site with the St James Senior Girls? School. In September 2000 the Schools moved into their current site. The present buildings were established in 1876 and in the last few years have been refurbished and adapted. The school provides large classrooms and expansive facilities. Young children enjoy the light, space and beauty of their surroundings. Facilities includes a large playground, well-equipped gymnasium, an amply sized assembly hall with a stage for drama productions, a refectory, airy, spacious classrooms, a well-stocked library, music rooms and arts and crafts rooms. The St James Junior Schools aims to provide the young child with a nourishing and simple education that is based on principles which are valid for all times and not subject to ever-changing fashions. It attempt to create an atmosphere of steadiness, freshness and limitlessness in which the child is met as a whole and perfect human being and in which there is care for the spirit, mind and body.
Approach to discipline: Primarily, the example of the teacher.
Uniform: Girl's: Summer dress and winter dress.
Special needs: At the age of 5 1/2 all children are given a simple screening to provide any obvious special need. The school then provides two teachers to work with individuals or small groups to meet those needs. (It also has contacts with experts and professionals when needed in particular fields).
Inspection: November 2004: ?St James Independent Junior School is a popular and well-subscribed school catering for boys and girls, sometimes separately and sometimes together. Attainment and progress are good overall and often very good. The learning and behaviour are of high quality and the pastoral care is excellent. The school maintains very cordial links with parents, and it makes the best use of its impressive premises. It is now in a strong position to develop the teaching with a view to raising those levels of attainment that remain below the potential of the pupils concerned, and to establish firmer direction and management of the curriculum.?.
