General information
Headteacher: Laura Hyde, appointed in 1995.
Staff: 43 (men 10, women 34).
Background: St James Independent School for Senior Girls was founded in 1975, along with a boys' senior school and junior schools for each sex, by Leon MacLaren, a London barrister. His aim was to provide a consistent education from the age of four through to the sixth form, which paid particular attention to each pupil's spiritual and emotional development as well as their intellectual and physical progress. Many teachers at St James have studied philosophy at the School of Economic Science, also founded by MacLaren, and meditation is a common practice among staff and pupils. In the sixth form, Plato is studied in depth and there is an emphasis on developing the art of clear speech through rhetoric and debating lessons. To maintain their emotional wellbeing, every girl is expected to sing with her form at least once a week. Physical welfare is promoted by participation in games twice a week. At all levels, Latin, Greek and Sanskrit may be studied, as well as maths, English, French, the sciences, history, religious studies, philosophy, art, music, drama, hospitality and ICT. Three concerts are staged every year and an opera every other year, as well as at least two drama productions annually. Girls can choose from a wide range of extracurricular activities, including table tennis, textiles, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme, athletics, Choi Kwang Do, lacrosse, netball, rounders, tennis and swimming. From January 2007, admission will take place through the GSA London Consortium Group.
