General information

Headteacher: Clarissa Farr, appointed in 2006.

Staff: 80 (men 20, women 66).

Background: St Paul's Girls' School was the top-ranked independent school from 2002 to 2005 in this guide, based on its examination results at A-level and GCSE. This year, it ranks third nationally 88% of all A-levels taken by girls here earned A grades this summer. The school aims to provide a stimulating environment where girls can work together based on mutual respect. Other than for PE, there is no uniform. Pastoral care is strong. A [L]sister scheme[R] pairs first-year pupils with a middle school pupil and one sixth-form student, and pupils see tutors daily. Facilities include a new sports hall, a large IT centre, a purpose-built theatre, separate science block and a library holding more than 20,000 volumes. The curriculum offers great breadth and covers languages, the humanities, maths, the sciences and the expressive arts, while also placing emphasis on the physical challenges of sport and the technical skills of operating new technologies. Most pupils take nine subjects at GCSE and in the sixth form can choose up to five AS-levels from more than 20 subjects on offer. Charity fundraising is extensive and service to the community provides older pupils with the opportunity to work in local primary schools and hospitals. The wider world is recognised through exchange visits to schools in France, Germany, Spain, Russia, America and Australia.
