General information

Headteacher: Stuart Dorrian, appointed in September 2001.

Staff: 11 (men 7, women 4).

Background: Previously a department of the upper school, The Latymer Preparatory School was created by the governors of The Latymer Foundation on its present site. Entrance is through interview and examination during an assessment morning. The school is 'especially well resourced and has impressive facilities recently developed and expanded in two elegant period houses adjacent to the River Thames'. A main feature of the school is its 'friendly and caring atmosphere', which offers 'close pastoral support to each individual boy'. Academic achievement is 'strong', but in addition all staff and boys contribute to 'an extensive range of activities' featuring sport, music, art and drama. There is a large choir and its own orchestra. The governors have announced their intention that the school should become co-educational in the near future and that further details can be received by contacting the Registrar.

Approach to discipline: 'The school endeavours to enforce a positive attitude to discipline and pupils who have made excellent progress are rewarded by having their names written in the Green Book. Any problems with behaviour are dealt with initially by the form tutor, deputy principal then principal. The home/school diary records all details.'

Uniform: Black blazer with school badge and tie, charcoal-grey trousers/shorts, blue shirts, dark-grey pullover, black shoes. 'All boys enjoy wearing their uniforms, team colours and kit. They have a sense of pride in being a Latymerian'.

Inspection: January 2005: 'Latymer Prep is a happy, lively school, which encourages and nurtures boys and girls, enabling them to become successful and confident learners. Pupils achieve high standards in the core subjects of English, mathematics and science and in most foundation subjects. Pupils respond enthusiastically to the high quality teaching. The clear vision and strong leadership of the principal and senior staff is helping the school to achieve many of the new initiatives. The high quality of pastoral care and their personal development leads to very good pupil behavior. Links with parents, the community and the Upper School are very good.'

Secondary schools: Latymer Upper.

Boys' age range: 7 to 11.

Girls' age range: 7 to 11.
