Background: The Moat School is a co-educational day school for children between the ages of 11 to 18. Each child has special tuition for specific area of difficulty and follows individual learning programmes to enhance strengths and overcome weaknesses. The school prepares students for GCSE and post GCSE public examinations to enable them to access further and higher education. ICT plays an important role in school life and is an integral part of the learning programme. All pupils are initially taught to touch type and the school endeavours to provide a laptop computer for the personal use of each pupil. The Moat School's ethos is basic yet profound. All children with dyslexia can be treated to achieve. The aim is that all pupils gain in self-esteem and self-confidence, both socially and academically.
Uniform: Boys wear grey trousers with a plain white shirt with the school sweatshirt. Girls wear a grey skirt of a sensible length, or grey trousers with a plain white blouse and the school sweatshirt.
Special needs: Each child has special tuition for specific areas of difficulties and follow individual learning programmes to enhance strengths and overcome weaknesses.
Inspection: February 2002: 'The Moat School is a good school. In the period of three and a half years that it has been operating, it has developed good quality staffing, accommodation and resources to meet the needs of secondary-aged pupils who have specific learning difficulties. A full secondary curriculum is provided, based upon the National Curriculum programmes of study suitably adapted and taught to meet the particular learning needs of the pupils. Pupils make good progress, build good relationships and develop positive behaviour. They gain confidence within the supportive community of the school, which is built upon strong relationships between adults and pupils. There is good quality teaching overall, with well-qualified teaching assistants working well in partnership with teachers. Partnership between the school and parents is very effective.' .
Boys' age range: 11 to 18.
