General information

Background: Founded in 1842; extended on several occasions; most recent building work, which finished in 1999, provided three new classrooms, large hall, library and computer suite, enlarged to hold 15 computers in 2000; new music and drama room. Over-subscribed, with 1.1 applications per place. Many out-of-hours clubs: basketball, chess, choir, football, gym, netball, recorder, rounders, cricket, orchestra and swimming. Cricket, football and basketball teams have won several local tournaments; cricket and football teams qualified for Hampshire finals; in 2003, under-10 cricket team won Hampshire championship and came third in South of England final; Hampshire indoor cricket champions (2004, 2005, 2006); all children encouraged to represent the school. Opportunities to learn musical instruments and French is taught to the juniors. 'The school aims to educate children across the educational spectrum.' Residential visits an important part of school life; nearly all juniors take part. Active parent-teacher and friends association raises substantial funds and arranges social events for whole community; five or six events for charity every year. NAACE mark, for quality in ICT (2005); BECTA award for ICT (2006); Healthy School award; Basic Skills Quality Mark (2004); Investor in People status (2005); DfES achievement award (2000, 2001, 2002). Ethos: 'The school wishes to offer children the widest curriculum possible and expects them to make the most of the opportunities offered. It is hoped every child will experience success during their time at the school and make them ready and confident for everyday life and their next stage of education.' .
