General information
Headteacher: Basil Brown, appointed in September 2005.
Staff: 12 (men 6, women 6).
Background: Boundary Oak School was founded in about 1918 on a site at Waterlooville and the Reverend A C Champion moved Boundary Oak to Widley. The school gained its name from the large oak tree that stood on the parish bounds of Portsmouth on the site at Widley. Eventually, Boundary Oak outgrew this site and moved to Roche Court in 1961, it also becomes an educational trust. The main building provides the accommodation for boarders, matrons and some resident tutors and also houses the dining hall, a 'well-stocked' library, quiet room, snooker room and a variety of common and changing rooms. Covered walkways connect the main house to the classroom blocks and other specialist buildings. The grounds contain three hard tennis courts, a netball court, a large outdoor heated swimming pool and eight acres of playing fields. A new oak beamed nursery department was completed in January 2000. Pupils are prepared for entry into a wide range of independent senior schools through both Scholarship and Common Entrance examinations. From age nine pupils are 'carefully' streamed into two forms. 'Many' organised clubs and activities take place outside school hours, including carpentry, dancing, cycling proficiency, judo, computers, golf and other sports. An unpretentious family oriented co-education prep school.
Approach to discipline: Consistent and firm.
Uniform: Blue and gold blazer, tie. White shirt, grey slacks. Tartan dresses and summer dresses for girls.
Special needs: There is a special needs department with a full time member of staff who provides support to children where necessary. The work of this department is co-ordinated by a special educational needs (SEN) co-ordinator and it operates in its own 'specially equipped' room.
Inspection: September 2003: 'Boundary Oak is a rapidly improving school that has just emerged from a difficult period of its history. It has a number of clear strengths but some significant weaknesses remain. The school achieves its main aims and provides a sound education that produces confident, happy and well-balanced pupils. Most pupils reach satisfactory standards. Parents support the school and their children well and numbers of pupils on roll are growing. The leadership provided by the new head is dynamic, but there is no senior management team to ensure effective consultation and communication. Too little monitoring of teaching and of pupils' work occurs and the impact of some policies is inconsistent.'
