General information
Headteacher: Barbara Elliott, appointed in 2005.
Background: Perched at the top of Highgate Hill on seven acres of land, Channing School has been educating young women since 1885. It prides itself on offering academic rigour in a warm, friendly environment where girls can develop their potential and a sense of themselves. Competition for entry is high with nearly eight applicants for every place. There is a strong family tradition and every new intake attracts pupils with family ties to former pupils. Intellectual ambition and creativity are notable features of Channing girls, who can choose from a wide range of subjects including ancient Greek and classical civilisation. All middle school pupils study Latin, French, German and Spanish and drama is on the timetable, offering every girl the chance to perform in front of an audience. Music is an important feature of school life. Two-thirds of girls learn to play an instrument and there are several concerts each term. Pupils are expected to participate in a wide range of sporting, cultural and community service events. The Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme is one of the most popular activities and there are more than 20 clubs ranging from cryptic crosswords to a fantasy share league. Girls get plenty of opportunities to go on school trips such as visits to museums and galleries or journeys abroad. Sixth-formers' recent destinations have included Rome, New York, Russia and Iceland. Facilities include a playing field for hockey and rounders, a music suite and modern art studios. Sixth-formers have free school meals.
Alumni: Baroness Cox, politician; Dr Catherine Neill, paediatric cardiologist; Princess Sarvath el-Hassan of Jordan; Emily Richard, actress.
Uniform: All girls must wear the school uniform except for those in the sixth form, who may wear appropriate clothes of their own choice.
Higher education: 100% (0 Oxford 2 Cambridge).
Special needs: An additional learning co-ordinator advises staff. Girls have individual education plans and children with moderate learning difficulties are catered for.
Inspection: May 2003: Channing School has many strengths and no significant weaknesses. Teaching and learning are of very good quality, behaviour is exemplary, and the school is generally well resourced. Communication with parents is firmly established, and the pupils' personal development and pastoral care are very well provided for. The range of activities is wide. The school has a strong ethos and is very effectively governed and managed. However, ICT is underdeveloped in both the junior and the senior schools, and pupils with special educational needs would benefit from more support in class.
Feeder schools: Channing Junior; Brookland Junior School, Barnet; The Village; Devonshire House; North Bridge House Kindergarten, Junior and Prep Schools.
Girls' age range: 4 to 18.
Percentage admitted according to academic ability: 100.
Average class size (seniors; 11-16): 20.
Average class size (sixth form): 8.
