General information

Background: Fortismere opened in 1983 as an LEA community school for girls and boys on the extensive Muswell Hill campus with a sixth form of 400 students in the Tetherdown sixth form centre. North and South wings comprise modern buildings with ample teaching accommodation. Fortismere is the base for the secondary department of Blanche Nevile School for the deaf for whom purpose-built accommodation opened in 2003. The DfES granted the school 'Technology College status' in 1997, now extended to 2007, and fully networked for information and communication technology. A new science block opened in 1999 and other laboratories and the learning centre were remodelled in 2002. The school has its own playing fields, and a heated swimming pool. A county standard sports hall with adjoining tennis courts and all-weather pitch were added in mid 2004 when one of the two gymnasiums became a dance studio. In the CHMI annual report to parliament for 2002 Fortismere was identified as a particularly successful school. It received DfES school achievement awards for the first two years of their inception, 2001 and 2002. The school aims to promote self-discipline and empathy for others, both within the school and the wider community.
