General information

Headteacher: Mark James.

Staff: 39 (men 22, women 17).

Background: Highgate Junior School was founded in 1889. All the buildings are situated in Bishopswood Road, close to Hampstead Heath and bordering playing fields. The pre-prep department is in a separate building, and a large sports centre belonging to the school is on the other side of the road. More than £2 million has been spent in the last eight years on refurbishment of the school. It has a tradition in music, drama and sport in particular, while the curriculum is designed to be broad and balanced. The school encourages fundraising for charities. Within the single foundation, the school aims to provide an excellent all round education, which will inspire the boys and girls to develop their full potential wherever it may lie.

Approach to discipline: Clear code of conduct published and agreed with the boys and parents. Reward orientated, based on a house system. Parents fully involved. Form tutors play a central role.

Uniform: White shirt, school tie, maroon blazer with school crest, dark trousers. Uniform regulations enforced rigorously.

Special needs: The school offers professional learning support for those identified as having special needs and also offers support to those who are particularly gifted and talented. Any additional support decided upon thereafter would be via the qualified learning support department. The school works with LEAs to ensure that the provisions of any statements are addressed according to the relevant statutory requirements and the school?s contract with parents.

Inspection: November 2005: 'The two schools achieve their aims and meet the needs of their pupils effectively. A broad and wide-ranging curriculum is provided with opportunities for all pupils to achieve well. Extra-curricular activities in the junior school are notably extensive and successful. In both schools teaching is generally good and sometimes outstanding. Pupils? writing and speaking skills are highly developed. Pupils are exceptionally well cared for and provision for their personal development is outstanding. Relationships between all in the community are very strong. The schools were last inspected in 2003, when the pre-preparatory school had no significant weaknesses. The junior school has improved substantially since the last inspection and has responded very well to all the recommendations, except the one concerning the lack of a development plan.'
