General information

Background: Situated on the outskirts of historical Highgate Village, St Michael's was originally founded as a boarding school in 1852. It is still housed in its original listed Victorian building, as well as a newer building opened by Margaret Thatcher in 1972. Four-and-a-half acres of grounds include a sports pavilion and several nature areas, and the school is also known for its dramatic and musical achievements. The school aims to 'emphasise the individual worth of each child, so that they can learn to respect one another within a Christian philosophy'. Those children with special educational needs are assessed and assisted individually. Various local educational visits are undertaken during the year, on which parents are welcome to accompany their children. St Michael's is keen to highlight its fundraising for a variety of national and international charities, as well as its links with the local community. As the winner of Microsoft's Best Primary Website competition two years ago, it is currently raising money to build a computer room and a science and technology centre. The school 'has always enjoyed the active involvement of parents' and is 'popular' with parents. The school is over-subscribed, receiving two applications for every available place.
