General information
Headteacher: P J Wylie, appointed in September 1992.
Staff: 21 (men 4, women 17).
Background: The school founded in 1895, the school has been on its present site in the centre of Harrow for almost 100 years. The original buildings, two Edwardian houses, have been extended and refurbished over the years to provide a bright, attractive teaching environment. Off site the pupils are able to benefit from the use of and attractive 25-acre sports facility. The nursery is located at St George's Hall, which is one and a half miles from the main school. Alpha achieves good sporting results and is 'strong' in speech and drama, in addition to regularly staging a musical production. The school has 'strong' community links and an enviable record of charity fundraising. After-school activities include various clubs and sporting opportunities. The Year 2 class teacher is the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) and provides support to pupils in conjunction with a part-time learning support assistant.
Approach to discipline: The school rule is 'positive not negative: Be kind to other people'.
Uniform: Blue and red uniform. 'Uniform regulations are strictly enforced.'
Inspection: October 2006: 'The school is successful in meeting its aims and the needs of almost all pupils consistently and effectively. It provides a broad and varied education for the vast majority of pupils. Pupils achieve well in several areas, but particularly in English, mathematics and science. They develop effective work skills and positive attitudes for study. Preparation for the next stage of education is very thorough. The school is governed, led and managed well in many respects. Staff work hard to provide high quality guidance and support for pupils. Consequently, pupils enjoy their school and are proud of it. Parents are very pleased with the education provided. Teaching is of good quality overall, though consistency is not yet achieved in all aspects. Considerable variations exist in the quality of short-term planning, the use of assessment information, and in meeting the differing needs of pupils, including the most able. The use of ICT in other subjects is at an early stage of development and the school is aware of this situation. The effectiveness of the school development plan as a management tool, in focusing the work of staff and in linking its priorities to staff training is limited. Satisfactory improvement has taken place since the 2000 inspection. The school has worked well to maintain a number of the strengths found at that time, including its care for pupils. Other aspects of work have improved steadily. However, several issues identified in 2000, such as the inconsistent quality of some aspects of teaching, still require improvement. The school meets all the regulatory requirements.'
