General information

Headteacher: Barnaby Lenon, appointed in September 1999.

Staff: 90 (men 78, women 15).

Background: Harrow aims to produce young men who will go on to be leaders in their chosen professions and promotes the development of intellectual curiosity and personal fulfilment. Pupils have dedicated teaching staff, top-notch facilities, good discipline and individual care in order to meet these great expectations. Harrow is London's sole boarding-only school. Consistently excellent exam results are achieved thanks to a broad education in which most departments run their own extracurricular societies to stimulate interest. Visiting speakers and fieldwork supplement lessons. A new 20-classroom block opened this year. All pupils have an academic tutor who meets them weekly to assess their progress. The sciences are popular and many boys go on to read science at university. Languages include Russian, Portuguese, Japanese and Arabic. Regular foreign trips are arranged to France, Germany, China and Spain. A strong music department offers individual tuition in orchestral instruments, the bagpipes, piano, organ, guitar and singing. A new recording studio and rehearsal room gives budding rock stars room to do their thing. All boys are encouraged to take part in some aspect of play production about 14 are staged each year and Harrow has a 390-seat theatre. Harrow Rifle Corps helps ingrain service and leadership in pupils and in the past year, Harrovians have won more army scholarships than pupils of any other school. Sports facilities include a nine-hole golf course, and nine boys have recently represented their country in sports.
