General information

Headteacher: Barnaby Lenon, appointed in 1999.

Background: Tradition gives Harrow a strong personality but it has also embraced new technology to an advanced level. As London's only and one of the country's few boarding-only schools, Harrow takes the full experience of its pupils seriously. Pastoral care is of a high standard and boys are kept busy with sport, art, music, drama and other hobbies, helped by teachers who all live in. Boys of mixed abilities are accepted; 55% in the common entrance exam can be a sufficient score to qualify for a place; securing one is a different matter, however, the school being oversubscribed by four [BR]to one. The school enjoys a wooded setting in London. Music, drama and art all have a strong following and facilities include the 28,000-volume Vaughn library, laptops in all classrooms, a new design technology building, a recording studio, a rehearsal room for rock groups and a purpose-built theatre.Resources for sports even include a nine-hole golf course. Harrow football is played while soccer, rugby and cricket teams go on international tours. [NEXT] Service and leadership are ingrained via the sixth-form monitor system, Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, Harrow Rifle Corps and charity work. Pupils win a large number of army scholarships. Alumni: Seven British prime ministers including Winston Churchill; Nehru of India; Lord Byron, poet; Richard Curtis, comedy writer; Lord Rayleigh, physicist.

Higher education: 100%.

Inspection: 2000: This is a very good school in which standards of attainment in relation to pupils' capabilities are good or very good across all subjects and which obtains good public examination results. The school has good levels of pastoral care and relationships among pupils and between them and the staff are of a high order.
