Background: Heathfield was founded by Miss Gayford in 1900 in a house at the foot of Byron Hill in Harrow, with just 30 pupils. A year later it transferred to a larger house in College Road. The junior school is housed in modern purpose-built accommodation, set in large grounds with spacious classrooms and specialist rooms for art, technology, science, music, information technology and physical education. The building has direct access to the senior school, enabling older junior girls to use senior facilities for music, art and sport. Girls begin physical education and swimming at the age of three. A wide range of extra-curricular activities is offered including orchestra, string group, choir, science, technology, gymnastics and needlework. The girls begin physical education and swimming at age three. Pupils taking music, ballet and speech and drama lessons are prepared for national examinations. Visits to places of interest are an integral part of the curriculum and a residential visit is offered to girls aged nine to 11. Before-school care, from 7.30am; after-school care, until 6pm. Over-subscribed, with five applications per place. Ethos: 'The school is a caring community that tries to ensure every individual is equally valued and supported throughout her time at the school to enable each girl to be a high-achiever.' .
Approach to discipline: The school aims to encourage each girl to develop self-confidence, together with a sense of responsibility, through high standards of personal conduct based on respect for oneself and others.
Uniform: The school colours are cherry-red and navy. Winter: tunic, coat, jumper. Summer: dress, blazer, hat. The uniform is strictly enforced.
Special needs: Additional support by form-teachers. A part-time special educational needs specialist teacher supports individual girls in the junior department. In the senior school, staff mentors girls who need support in their studies and also the most able.
Inspection: November 2004: 'Heathfield School provides high quality education at every stage. The junior department is happy and successful and standards in the department are good and often high, promoted by very good teaching, very good leadership and management. In the senior school, very good teaching stimulates independent learning and inquiry from the girls, whose very good attitudes and skills are conducive to effective learning and good standards. The provisions made throughout the school for the girls? personal development and for their pastoral care are very good and result in happy, well-rounded and very well behaved pupils who treat each other with tolerance and respect. The school benefits from very good support from the Girls? Day School Trust (GDST) from willing and committed governors and from very good management, which provides purposeful leadership and effective and efficient organisation. No major aspect of the school is weak.'
