General information

Headteacher: Christine Juett, appointed in 1997.

Staff: 63 (men 7, women 54).

Background: Realising the potential of the whole person is the aim of Heathfield School, which is why the curriculum incorporates the best of academic tradition with creative, practical and technological skills. Heathfield prides itself on meeting the physical, social and spiritual needs of each girl and is committed to a strong partnership with parents. Facilities are continuously updated. A sports centre and rooms for music, careers and ICT were built recently and the school is adding a new drama studio and dining room. Twenty-four subjects are available at A-level and there is a non-examined programme of general studies. A head girl and deputies help staff to run the school, and others take leadership roles on the school council or by organising clubs. There is a strong musical tradition and individual tuition is available in many instruments. Orchestras and choirs give regular concerts and enter regional and national competitions. Drama is offered as a subject option through to the sixth form, with several performances and regular visits to theatres each year. Private speech and drama lessons are also available, leading to Lamda exams. Textiles is a popular option up to sixth-form level and many girls exhibit work and hold fashion shows. A wide range of sports is offered, as well as dance, both in class lessons and as extracurricular options. Facilities include a 25-metre indoor pool and fitness suite. Pupils take part in Young Enterprise, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme, production of the school magazine and even sky-diving.

Special needs: A special educational needs co-ordinator provides individual and small-group support.

Inspection: November 2004: In the senior school, very good teaching stimulates independent learning and inquiry from the girls, whose very good attitudes and skills are conducive to effective learning and good standards. The provisions made throughout the school for the girls' personal development and for their pastoral care are very good and result in happy, well-rounded and very well-behaved pupils who treat each other with tolerance and respect.
