General information
Headteacher: L Gibson.
Staff: 42 (men 13, women 29).
Background: The school was founded in 1850 in 'Julians', a house which had belonged to the novelist Anthony Trollope. Shortly after the publication of his book Orley Farm, in which he described his former home, Trollope gave permission for the school to take that name. In 1901 the school moved to its present site with grounds which cover more than 25 acres of playing fields and woodland in a 'large and attractive private estate' and provide 'wonderful surroundings in which to educate young pupils'. Recent developments include a new pre-prep building, all-weather pitch, quadrangle, ICT room and music block. A 'proper emphasis' is laid on academic work combined with 'excellence in games and the arts' and there is a 'wide variety of activities in which each child can fulfil his or her potential in a happy and interesting way'. In the last three years pupils have won 36 scholarships to leading London independent senior schools.
Approach to discipline: 'Few school rules, emphasis on courtesy and consideration. Discipline appropriate to individual and misdemeanour.'
Uniform: Maroon blazer and grey sweater with red stripe. 'Keenly enforced.'
Inspection: November 2001: 'Orley Farm School is a good school, which is very well led and has a strong ethos and sense of purpose. Teachers and pupils work together very effectively to enable good standards to be achieved in almost all areas of the school. However, limitations in the systematic monitoring of teaching and some weaknesses in information and communication technology (ICT) prevent this good practice being extended to all areas.'
Secondary schools: Harrow; Eton; Merchants Taylors; St Paul's; Westminster.
Boys' age range: 4 to 13.
Girls' age range: 4 to 13.
