General information

Headteacher: Mary Morris, appointed in 2000.

Background: The school occupies a green site in Northwood yet central London is easily reached via the Metropolitan line. With more than 100 years of experience, it offers able girls an education that has academic excellence at its core, with creative and sporting talents also highly valued. Teaching is aided by specialist facilities that include a science block with 10 laboratories, design and technology workshops, art rooms, a drama studio, a language laboratory, a recital room and an ICT centre. The curriculum is designed to allow pupils to achieve intellectual fulfilment and excellent grades. All study two foreign languages Italian, Japanese and Spanish are among the options and Latin, as well as the three sciences. The school is one of an increasing number to offer the International Baccalaureate alongside A-levels in the sixth form. Careers education is given high priority. Opportunities beyond the curriculum play an important role; each term is busy with concerts, displays and dramatic productions, and many girls take extra tuition in music, ballet, speech and drama. They can also participate in the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, and St Helen's is one of only eight girls' schools in the country to run a CCF, which it does jointly with Merchant Taylors' School.Debating and public speaking are both popular, with girls competing in national competitions. They are encouraged to run clubs. Specialist teachers offer sports coaching, and school teams regularly compete at national level.

Inspection: 2000: The school provides a very good quality of education for its pupils. Very good personal relationships, high expectations and good teaching ensure that, overall, girls of all abilities achieve high academic standards. The classroom atmosphere is very positive and promotes good learning. The curriculum and the extracurricular activities provide a wide range of opportunities for the girls to develop their talents and interests, and contribute strongly to their personal development. The school has a strong sense of community in which individuals are well known, valued and supported. Girls are happy and enjoy school. The quality of pastoral care is high. Staff are supportive, encouraging and approachable. The well-being and progress of the girls are a high priority. The school is well led and governed. A clear commitment is shown to its continuing development.
