General information

Background: Established as a grammar school more than 400 years ago, The John Lyon School on the hill in Harrow maintains strong links with Harrow school. Both schools commemorate the death of their founder each October with a service and a concert. The school aims to blend tradition with innovation. While proud of its focus on traditional subjects such as English, maths, economics, science and modern languages, it aims to encourage creativity through strong programmes in art and design, music and drama as well as developing new subjects including music technology and psychology. There is a strong tradition of music and drama at the school. A number of pupils have won places in the National Youth Choir and orchestra and in the National Youth Theatre, as well as reaching the finals of the National Festival of Youth Music. John Lyon pupils have also gone on to win choral and organ scholarships at Oxford and Cambridge as well as places at leading art schools. The school places a strong emphasis on sport, including football, swimming, tennis, rugby sevens, water polo and horseriding. The school grounds house a modern sports hall, fitness studio, pool, indoor archery range and cricket nets, all-weather pitches, tennis courts, a nine-hole golf course, climbing wall and athletics track. A wide range of interests is covered. Pupils are encouraged to play in the school's salsa band or learn traditional cabinet making, car maintenance and robotics and to prepare for life after school through community service and outward-bound experience in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme.

Inspection: November 2004: A rounded and fulfilling education is provided at The John Lyon School. The dedication of its staff is praised along with the school's personal development programme, which helps pupils' social and moral growth. The school has been advised to improve certain part of its accommodation, described as inadequate or restricted.
