Background: Farr School is a seven-stage, non-denominational school for children living in Strathnairn between Littlemill and Brin, an area in the north-east of Scotland near Inverness. The school is situated to the south of Loch Ness , on the road to Fort Augustus. It was opened in 1877 to replace two smaller church schools at Broomhill, one of which had a house attached. This building has been incorporated into the present school site to provide a 'good-sized' infant classroom. In the last century, the roll has risen as high as seventy and fallen to only seven, and at present lies at what could be considred as an average number. The school has recently been renovated to provide a classroom, storage space, and staff accommodation. The old infant room is used as a library for educational broadcasts and computer studies. Areas for mathematics, crafts and science are situated around the building. The school has 'extensive' grounds, consisting of a 'large' grassed ball playing area, a small copse of indigenous trees and a tarmac area for wet days. A recent addition is a former pupil garden. Farr Primary recently won the Tom Johnstone Memorial Award for an environmental project and was also the regional winner of the Daily Telegraph Schools Newspaper Competition. The school is 'very much a focal point' in the local community, with ex-pupils returning every summer to help pupils with their local studies. Each year the school raises funds for two different charities. 'Farr School endeavours to provide a warm, welcoming and caring environment for all.' .
