General information
Background: Gairloch High School is situated in the village of Gairloch 'amid spectacular and unspoilt' scenery on the shoreline of Loch Gairloch and looking over the sea to Sky. Its 'beautiful sandy beaches, rugged mountains and hundreds of freshwater hill lochs' provide numerous opportunities for climbing, walking, ornithology, fishing and other outdoor pursuits, while a manicured links course offers golf for all standards of play. This 'thriving' community is 60 miles from Dingwall and 75 miles from inverness and the school's pupils are drawn from one of the biggest catchment areas in the country covering well over 500 square miles, some pupils travelling a considerable distance to school each day. In 1994, work was completed on a new purpose-built five million high school incorporating community education, a community library and leisure facilities. The school is generously staffed which allows a particularly wide and forward-looking curriculum in addition to relatively small classes. The school's ICT facilities are second to none and its thriving extra-curricular provision includes a heavy commitment towards sport, with successful football, rugby, hockey and athletics squads. A healthy Duke of Edinburgh award programme is in place and foreign and local trips form an important part of the school year. The school benefits from its own outdoor centre on the shores of Loch Maree. The school?s aim is to ensure that each pupil has an awareness of the possibilities available to him/her within society and the responsibilities required by society and also it provides a secure and happy environment within which staff and pupils can work together to achieve their aims. To maintain an ethos, the school offers a structure of courses and activities that will ensure that the achievement of every pupil is raised to a maximum; at the same time allowing for their different needs, abilities and skills to be developed to their fullest extent.
