General information
Background: Glen Urquhart High currently occupies buildings dating from 1877 and is due to move into new premises in August 2002. Class sizes are small with a teacher-pupil ratio of 10:1, and practical lessons have a maximum of 17 pupils. In addition to a wide variety of national curriculum courses, the school offers an extra-curricular programme which includes shinty, football, basketball, golf, fishing, cycling, cross country, chess, Scrabble, hockey, computer club, swimming, hill walking, enterprise activities, the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme and a fiddle orchestra. Educational visits supplement school work and in recent years pupils have visited Denmark, Germany, France and Japan. Pupils have been successful in a number of national sporting events, including international shinty, representing Scotland at athletics and regularly taking part in skiing, golf, archery, horse riding, basketball, volleyball, dance and gymnastics competitions. Pupils and teachers relocated to France for a 10-day celebration of the Millennium. The school has also been commended for its achievements in both the World Wise Quiz and the Understanding Industry presentation skills team championship. Pupils are encouraged to raise funds for charity and recent beneficiaries have included Children in Need, Comic Relief, Meningitis Care, MacMillan Cancer Fund and various local charities.
