General information

Background: The school was established in the summer of 1763 by the decision of Sir James MacDonald of Sleat. Its first headteacher was Alexander Campbell, who later became minister of the parish of Portree. The school has become the sole secondary school on the island and now takes pupils from some of the Inner Hebridean Islands: Raasay, Canna, Eigg and Soay. However, a number of pupils from the mainland attend because of the parents' charter. Many pupils leave for school around 7am, since they can have an 80 mile round trip. Others stay in the school hostel for a week or even a term at a time. Adaptations have recently been completed which allow the school to cater for disabled pupils. An increasing proportion of the pupils have had their primary education taught fully through the medium of Gaelic and the school offers a range of subjects in Gaelic: mathematics, personal and social education, history and home economics. The sporting side of the school is 'particularly strong': hockey, shinty and basketball are played against many schools and over the years a 'significant' number of pupils have competed at national level. School excursions are also 'vital'; recent trips to have been made to Strasbourg, Prague and Morocco. It 'gains tremendously from the strength of the local community'; school and community 'complement each other extremely well'. The school aims to create an ethos in which hard work is valued and self-discipline and respect for others are evident. .
