General information

Background: Thurso High School is a six-year comprehensive, which offers the best in traditional Scottish values. The broad and balanced curriculum provides a challenge for all its pupils, many of whom go on to Higher and Further Education. The School is the most northerly secondary school on the Scottish mainland serving the town of Thurso and the surrounding rural area, which includes the villages of Castletown, Halkirk and Reay. It is a non-denominational, six-year comprehensive with just over 900 pupils at present. Many of our students travel daily by bus from as far afield as Canisbay in the east and Strathy in the west. The main building, which has excellent views over the surrounding countryside and across the Pentland Firth to Orkney, was designed by Sir Basil Spence and was opened in 1958. A large two-storey extension was added in 1970 followed by a games hall. Some hutted accommodation is used. Playing fields with rugby and football pitches and an all weather running track are adjacent to the school. Pupils have access to the local swimming pool for physical education classes. Classrooms are generally well equipped. Modern technology is used extensively in many departments and in the school library. The school is now fully networked and well equipped with modern computers. Video conferencing facilities are available in the school library, allowing pupils and staff to benefit from distance learning opportunities. The local community benefits from the use of certain school facilities in the evenings and at weekends. The large school hall, with theatrical stage and modern sound and lighting systems, is a major community resource. The school provides a wide range of extra-curricular activities including: basketball, chess club, cricket, rugby and squash and drama club. It provides various opportunities to enhance the learning of the pupils. The school aims to provide a modern and flexible curriculum that will give our pupils essential skills and knowledge. .
