General information
Background: Situated on the edge of Ullapool, this school was upgraded from a junior secondary in 1979 and further upgraded to stage five/stage six status in 1985. A long campaign has since resulted in the school moving into a new, permanent building in October 1999. This 'magnificent' new building, which is shared with the community, was designed to blend in with the local architecture while offering modern facilities including a drama studio, all weather pitch, recording studio and fully networked classrooms. The school serves one of the largest catchment areas in the country with 'approximately half' the pupils travelling to school by bus. 'Considerable consultation' with the local community has led to two 'major projects' to enhance the facilities, both of which attracted lottery funding: an arts project, involving local and national artists working with pupils on 'aspects of design and integration of works of art into the building'; and a performing arts project which is converting the hall into a music and drama venue. The aim of the school is to provide all students, staff and members of the community with the opportunity to attain their maximum potential whilst contributing to society in an informed and positive manner. It also aims to treat each pupil as an individual and to provide a caring and friendly environment in which every child will be encouraged to develop skills and abilities which will enable them to cope with the requirements of an ever changing world.
