General information

Background: The school was founded as a Sunday school over 200 years ago and has occupied its current site on land given by the Duke of Northumberland since 1906. It became comprehensive in 1978 and also expanded from two-form entry to four-form entry. The school?s first-class facilities are set in extensive and attractive grounds. There is a learning resource centre with impressive reference and lending sections. The school is at the forefront of information and communication technology with five fully equipped rooms, all of which have networked computers. Its new sixth form centre provides excellent facilities for individual study and socialising. The school offers a wide range of lunchtime and after-school clubs including ICT, study club, Christian union, debating, drama, art, textiles, reading and the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. There are a variety of musical activities including several choirs, wind band, orchestra, string and guitar groups. There are also many sports clubs. Girls represent borough and county teams in a number of sports. The school maintains strong links with partner schools in France, Germany, South Africa and a group of girls recently visited China. The sixth form is part of a consortium. The school aims to promote Christian values and provides a spiritual dimension within which all may grow in their own faith. The school is seeking to become a Specialist Science College. .
