General information

Background: Bredgar School is situated in a 'charming' village in Kent. The main school buildings date from 1868 and are a useful history resource, not least because they bear the marks of sharpenings of slate pencils made by pupils long ago. In addition to the main classrooms there is a demountable building for teaching science, technology, art and music, and also a small classroom for group work. The 'attractive' grounds include a field, playground and a health and fitness area. There is an environmental pond and wildlife area, gardens and raised beds. The village hall is used for displays and performances, the serving of lunches and PE. The adjacent church and churchyard are used to enhance the science, art, technology, history and geography curriculum in addition to RE. The pupils and staff have been involved in many notable curricular achievements' including winning art, craft and science displays at the Kent county show; contributing to Bitsa (a BBC Childrens' art, craft and technology programme) and making a technology video for the National Curriculum Council. They have marched as a Roman army and appeared as such on 'Blue Peter'. They have also won a Junior Education magazine competition based on a study of water snails. The headteacher won the primary science teacher of the year award in 1996, a national event sponsored by the ASE and the Times Educational Supplement. The pupils won the science challenge competition in 1999 at Imperial College and the school has featured in geography, art and technology curriculum development publications. Music is a 'strength' and pupils have performed in a drama and music arts pageant featured on a CD. Community links are 'strong and are a strength of the school'.
