General information
Background: Founded in 1518 by John Blubery, the school has occupied the same site in the Wealden town of Cranbrook for nearly 500 years. Queen Elizabeth I granted its Royal Charter in 1574. It offers six boarding houses in 70 acres of grounds, and facilities which include a 400-seat theatre, suite of music practice rooms, and a recently-built sports centre with Astroturf playing surface. Purpose-built preforming arts centre and new sixth-form centre opened in 2004; state-of-the-art telescope in 2005. Students study four or five AS/A2 subjects. Sport includes lacrosse, basketball, hockey, cricket, rugby, tennis, netball and athletics. Identified as an 'outstanding' school in the 1997 Ofsted annual report. Annual Lenten Appeal raises funds for school's Tanzania project and other charitable organisations. Specialist science college status. Over-subscribed, with two applications per place. Sportsmark Gold; Investor in People status; training school status (2004). Ethos: 'The school aims to help pupils to develop personal, spiritual and moral values, an understanding of religions and beliefs, a tolerance of others and their ways of life and to be caring members of their community.' .
