General information

Background: Founded in 1576; moved to current site to west of town centre in 1866. Pupils have use of 11 acres of sports fields close to main site; technology block opened in 1989, sports centre and international studies centre (1995), learning resources centre and humanities block (1998), 10 laboratories, and performing arts centre (2000). Continuing programme of development has seen extension to arts centre, adding drama/dance room, visual arts suite, music technology suite, and additional teaching space. Sixth-form centre opened in 2006; also sports pavilion extended.Offers 15 sports and regularly competes at national level. European links; many opportunities to travel abroad, including nine foreign exchanges each year. Acts as mentor to other schools, since participation in Raising Achievement/Transforming Learning programme. Specialist language college status since 1995, offering 10 modern foreign languages. Particular emphasis on community service. Over-subscribed, with nearly four applications per place. Investor in People status (1995).
