General information

Background: Founded in 1904, the school moved in 1928 to its current large site on the edge of Ashford, close to the M20. A new three-storey block was completed in 1992, including a language suite and world satellite system; also a fully-equipped performing arts studio. Further expansion, including up-to-date facilities for ICT, technology, art and science, was completed in 200; the school was recently adapted to enable it to offer education to a growing number of students in wheelchairs. It offers 24 subjects at A-level. Fast pace enables students to study at least 10 subjects to GCSE, including Spanish, French, German, and separate sciences. Information technology is encouraged in all subjects and there are several IT rooms in addition to a computer network throughout the school. Active sports department; extensive grounds include an all-weather Astroturf sports pitch, grass pitches, and hard-court areas. Several pupils represent the county and UK. Specialist music college status; shares site with Kent Music School; up to 150 pupils have instrumental lessons. Significant range of extra-curricular activities is offered, with high participation rates. The Friends of Highworth (for parents) and the Past Student Association are also offered. Part of Ashford Excellence Cluster, with provision for gifted and talented pupils. Before-school care, from 8am; after-school care, until 5pm. Over-subscribed, with 1.7 applications per place. Investor in People status; DfES achievement award (2001).
