General information

Background: Established in 1549, the school moved to its current 16-acre site in 1930. The main neo-Tudor-style block is built around a cloistered quadrangle. Newer wings date from the early 1960s and the second quadrangle was completed with the opening of the sixth form and art blocks in 1981. As well as classrooms, there are 12 science laboratories, a language laboratory, three computer centres, a set of music rooms, a lecture theatre and a well-stocked school library. Academic strengths include GCSE History and A-levels in art, computing and modern languages. There is a big extra-curricular programme for sport. Inter-form competitions, clubs and team practices run at lunchtime and after-school. The school has very good sporting facilities, which include a sports hall, gymnasium, weight training room, three rugby pitches, indoor and outdoor cricket nets, two grass and artificial cricket pitches, three tennis courts and a sports pavilion. Art, technology and computing facilities are also available during lunchtime and after-school. The school also offers outdoor activities to students in Year 9 and upwards. Recent extra-curricular successes have included chess, debating and scientific competitions. The school has a wide ranging work experience scheme and strong relations with the Combined Cadet Force. Specialist language college status. Ethos: 'The school aims to provide a welcoming and friendly atmosphere where staff and students treat each other with respect.' .
