Background: Founded in 1576; became co-educational in 1967; a school where all students 'are expected to work hard, to achieve their full potential and are encouraged to develop their social, creative and cultural abilities to the full'. Notable facilities for sport: sports hall, large gymnasium, football pitches, rugby pitch, hockey pitch, netball courts, tennis courts, athletics track, cricket pitch and artificial cricket wicket; access to local town swimming pool. Many pupils achieve county and national status in traditional sports; also in others, such as hammer-throwing and 10-pin bowling. Variety of sports clubs, including football, rugby, hockey, netball, cricket and swimming; frequent practices or matches after school. The school is proud to be a central part of the community; students are regularly involved in many charity fund raising events.
