General information

Background: Origins in Middle Ages as educational foundation for children in Canterbury; emerged as separate school for girls in 1881; girls follow 800-year-old tradition in achieving high academic standards: 'learning civilised and humane values and developing the personality and character to allow them to go on to play a leading role in the wider world'. Located south of Canterbury, school occupies extensive site; has benefited from substantial renovation and improvement. High, airy modern building from 1950s supplemented by number of purpose-built blocks; accommodation and resources described now as 'excellent'. Facilities include spacious sports fields and open areas, 11 laboratories, specialist classrooms, large drama studio, three dedicated art rooms, modern craft, design and technology rooms, library, three large computer rooms, music suite, refurbished sixth-form centre, and careers and higher education library. Proud of many sporting achievements; close links with Canterbury Hockey Club; some pupils are members of national teams. Specialist music college status. Artsmark Gold (2005). Ethos: 'For girls to do well, they have to feel good about being at school and good about themselves. Our message of aspiring to excellence comes through the formal and informal curriculum, but most crucially in the relationship of individual pupils and teachers built on encouragement, sensitivity to needs and mutual respect.' .
